Moonflower is the debut album from Mick Mayer of Atlanta-based group, Red Sea. All material was written, recorded and performed by Mick at his house in Atlanta. The songs were then co-produced, mixed and mastered by Jake Thomson of Breathers.
WEBSITEMick Mayer is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Atlanta GA, who has been releasing music for over a decade. His most notable works were developed as a member of the group Red Sea: "In the Salon" (2015) and "Sugar & Spice" (2019). He also worked as a songwriter and performer on Mayer & Mayer's "Tulsi" (2020) and Honey Harper's "Honey Harper & The Infinite Sky" (2022.) Moonflower is Mick Mayer's debut album as a solo artist. The 10-tracks integrate elements of his previous projects with a cohesive soft rock sound that derives inspiration from the likes of Kacey Musgraves and Hiroshi Sato. Mayer uses the raw and nostalgic nuances of acoustic guitar with the expansive capabilities of synthesizers to manifest a welcoming yet forward-thinking sound world. Moonflower also showcases some of the most direct and personal lyrical content that Mayer has ever written. The songs profess themes of rebellious love, redemption and shame resilience. Among these, a rejection of religious conditioning and an embracing of his gayness remains consistent. To Mick, “Being queer is as natural as the kind of flowers that bloom at night” despite what his Catholic upbringing in the south would suggest. Moonflower stands as a testament to the belief that homosexuality holds divine space in the natural world.
